Curriculum

Computing

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.

Hunslet Moor aims to develop children into independent learners and computational thinkers by working on a curriculum that covers both procedural and declarative knowledge. We aim for children to feel empowered when using technology and for them to understand how the skills they are taught can positively impact on their learning and success in later life. Our aim is for children to feel inspired by the idea of careers in technology.

Intent

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, the computing curriculum aims to develop independent learners and confident computational thinkers through a balance of procedural and declarative knowledge. Children are empowered to use technology effectively and understand how digital skills support their learning and future success, including potential careers in technology. The curriculum is built using the Teach Computing framework, ensuring clear progression and full coverage of the National Curriculum. Lessons are carefully sequenced and scaffolded to support inclusive practice so that all pupils can succeed and thrive. A key thread running throughout the curriculum is online safety, with objectives from Education for a Connected World revisited regularly. Pupils are taught how to stay safe online, manage inappropriate content and build respectful, healthy relationships within digital communities.

Implementation

Computing lessons at Hunslet Moor Primary School use a wide range of resources, including Beebots, iPads and individual Chromebooks, supported by age-appropriate online programmes. Google Classroom and interactive smartboards are used to model learning, support practical activities and allow pupils to record progress and respond to next steps, with non-digital learning recorded in Wider Curriculum books. Computing is taught weekly, with additional online safety sessions delivered through dedicated Online Safety days each half term. In Early Years, learning is guided by Development Matters 2020, with technology embedded into continuous provision and everyday play experiences. Children use technology to enhance learning through role play, creative activities, photography and storytelling linked to online safety and future careers. Assessment is carried out through unit quizzes, regular retrieval practice and summative assessments using Sonar in line with the school’s assessment model.

Impact

The computing curriculum at Hunslet Moor Primary School is a high-quality spiral curriculum that supports learning and progression over time by revisiting key themes and building on prior knowledge each year. This approach ensures that pupils who remain on track make good or better progress throughout their time in school. The quality of teaching and learning is monitored regularly through learning walks, lesson observations, pupil voice, book scrutinies and reviews of digital evidence. The impact of online safety education is measured annually through the National Online Safety Survey, completed by all pupils. The school aims for children to leave with a clear understanding of both the benefits and risks of technology. Pupils are equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to navigate education, work and online life safely, enabling positive contributions to society.
